The US in rice

I'm becoming increasingly interested in visualisations of data and this one particularly caught my imagination. It's a mound of rice, with one grain for every person in the US. It's part of a larger installation called Of All The People In The World.

This reminds me of the story with exponential numbers and the chessboard. I remember this from the Numb3rs tv show and corresponding activities
