“Matthew’s easy going demeanour makes him highly approachable and students respond positively to his efforts to get them actively involved in their own learning. I thoroughly enjoyed the tone of his classes; students respond positively to his good-humoured approach. He thoroughly enjoys discussing his teaching and he has excellent insights about his students.” Joe, Head of Mathematics at Phillips Exeter Academy
I have been teaching for 19 years, at top-ranking schools including Charterhouse in Surrey and Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, USA. I've run dotmaths for five years, helping over 150 students achieve higher grades in their exams.
I have taught almost every module in Mathematics and Further Mathematics for each of the four English A-level specifications (Edexcel, AQA, OCR and MEI) as well as the International Baccalaureate, the Pre-U and the Advanced Placement Calculus and Statistics courses.
I have prepared candidates for the AEA (Advanced Extension Award), the Oxford Entrance Test and STEP (Sixth Term Exam Paper for entry in Mathematics to Cambridge.)
I have also taught undergraduates and postgraduates in Mathematics, Economics and Business Studies, and I have helped students at the University of York with the MTE (Mathematical Techniques in Economics) and Microeconomics II exams. I have worked with students studying for the quantitative section of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination, required for entry to postgraduate programmes in the US).
I have been an examiner for Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge Assessments (OCR).
I have an Enhanced Disclosure certificate which means that I have been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau. (You can see this in the picture above.)
I was formerly a governor of Fulford School, a top-performing specialist Maths and Computing comprehensive school in York, where I set up and ran the maths club. I currently provide Oxbridge interview advice and preparation for a number of local state schools, including St Aidan's School in Harrogate.
I am committed to continuous professional development. In the last three years I have attended a weeklong residential course run by the UK Mathematics Foundation at Cambridge, and three of the Goldsmiths’ Company’s weeklong residential courses held at Queen Mary, London, and Brunel University (in Mathematics, Astronomy and Particle Physics).
I am a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (where I am a news editor of the Society's online journal, Significance) and I have been a member of the Mathematical Association, the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
